The West Highland Railway
What's Included?
Monday 20th April- Friday 24th April 2026
There are many great railway journeys in Europe, yet one of the very greatest, most scenic lines is not that far away. West Highland Railway is actually two different lines, branching at Crianlarich. We sample both on this rail adventure from the popular Winnock Hotel, with scenic coach rides, a wee dram and a loch cruise thrown in for good measure.

Itinerary
Monday |
We journey north to the pretty conservation village of Drymen, situated in the heart of the Trossachs National Park. |
Tuesday |
An early start sees us transfer to Dumbarton to pick up Scotrail's West Highland Line's western branch. Not long after we join we are greeted with the watery landscapes around Gareloch and Loch Long. Skirting the top edge of Loch Lomond, at Crianlarich the route heads west through lochs and glens to the sea at Oban. In Oban we have free time and an included tour and wee dram at Oban Distillery, before our coach transports us back to Drymen. |
Wednesday |
We begin the day with a relaxing 45 minute cruise on Loch Katrine. Hear about the rich history and nature brought alive with live commentary from the knowledgeable captain. Afterwards, we make our way to Callander, a small town surrounded by magnificent scenery. |
Thursday |
We head for Crianlarich today to join the West Highland Line's northern branch. Very different to our previous journey to Oban, the line climbs high into the western Highlands. Passing Bridge of Orchy, the tracks are built into the heather across Rannoch Moor. There are no roads here, just the railway, and you can see deer scampering and wildlife in abundance. Passing Corrour, the UK's highest mainline station, we descend to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis. With free time here and, having witnessed arguably the most scenic line on the UK rail network, we return on one of the most scenic roads through the mountains of Glencoe. |
Friday |
After breakfast we commence our journey homeward, arriving back during the evening. |
