Combining two of Thwaites Hotels’ 4 star spa hotels in the north of England allows us to really delve into the landscapes and culture of the north country. Beginning in Yorkshire, we spend a day in historic York, a walled city with Viking and Roman heritage dominated by the Minster. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway takes us to the coast at charming Whitby, before we meander through the Yorkshire Dales to the North Lakes Hotel & Spa. From this handy location near Penrith we explore both the north and south Lakes, including Grasmere, Keswick and Ullswater, then sailing and steaming on a classic Windermere day out.

Conveniently situated in the suburbs between Leeds and York, the Thorpe Park Hotel offers fabulous leisure facilities, including and indoor pool, as well as relaxing restaurants and bar.Rooms are well equipped with all modern amenities.
Resort: York and Whitby are fairly level, unless you wish to climb the 199 steps to the Abbey! Hotel: level with a lift to all floors, but some rooms do have one step between the sleeping area to the seating area.

Located on the edge of Penrith town centre, the North Lakes is an oasis of calm within a stone’s throw of the Lake District’s many delights. Indoor pool and spa facilities add to the hotel’s attraction, whereas public facilities such as restaurants and bar concentrate on providing a relaxing ambience.
Resort: Excursions do require getting on and off boats and steam trains. Keswick and Bowness are relatively flat. Penrith town centre itself. Hotel: Generally level and there is a lift.

Itinerary
Day 1 |
We travel to Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa with comfort stops as required and a main stop for lunch before arriving late afternoon with time to relax before dinner. |
Day 2 |
A short journey to York today. After your full cooked breakfast, we head east to the historic walled city, where we enjoy a river cruise on the Ouse to get to know the city. Free time then allows you to explore at your own leisure, with lots of museums, the Minster, the Shambles and even Betty's tempting you. |
Day 3 |
Today, we will transfer to Pickering where we board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a stunningly diverse journey to the coast. Steaming across heather moorland landscapes, we pass by Goathland Station which featured as Aidensfield in Heartbeat, before descending to Whitby, a picturesque fishing port framed by its famous abbey and the best fish and chips in Yorkshire. |
Day 4-5 |
We transfer to the North Lakes Hotel & Spa in Penrith, skirting the Yorkshire Dales on our way and stopping for a visit to Skipton. The following day is at leisure to explore Penrith or make use if the hotel's facilities. |
Day 6 |
It's time to get our bearings with a day's touring the north Lakes region. A scenic journey cutting through the Lake District sees us reach Grasmere to visit Wordworth's Dove Cottage. During the day we'll also have time in Keswick and admire the beauty of Ullswater. |
Day 7 |
In contrast to yesterday, today is for the south Lakes, as we steam from Haverthwaite to Windermere at Lakeside, followed by a gentle glide across Windermere itself on a lake cruise to Bowness. |
Day 8 |
After breakfast we depart our hotel, returning home in the afternoon. |
